As is the case for all stars, there are two main components to this motion: a linear path across the sky caused by the star's motion through the Galaxy, and a series of oscillations, caused by the motion of the Earth around the Sun. After including the pixel position information, an astrometric accuracy of 6 Г— 10 -5 pixel was obtained, for a PSF motion over more than five pixels. This animation shows the observed path across the sky, over four years, of a star that is orbited by a planet. The technique of spectro-astrometry (measuring the wavelength dependence of the position of an object) has been used to observe a number of pre-main-sequence stars. The starвЂ™s motion compared to other stars shows that an exoplanet exists. We canвЂ™t see the exoplanet, but we can see the star move. Results: The calibration system yielded the pixel positions to an accuracy estimated at 4 Г— 10 -4 pixel. The minimization of function parameters was done iteratively, until convergence was obtained, revealing the pixel information needed for the calibration of astrometric measurements.

The Young fringes were parametrized as products of time and space dependent functions, based on various pixel parameters. Finally, we set these efforts into the context of Gaia, ESA's astrometry mission scheduled for launch in 2013, and present an outlook on the future of astrometric exoplanet detection from the ground. Methods: The interferometric calibration system produced modulated Young fringes on the detector. The objective is an accuracy of 5 Г— 10 -6 pixel on the location of a Nyquist sampled polychromatic point spread function.

An experimental testbed combining an astrometric simulator and an interferometric calibration system is used to validate both the hardware needed for the calibration and the signal processing methods. In the same way as the radial-velocity method, precise astrometry takes advantage of the binary nature of a star+planet system, and allows for the detection. To fulfill this goal, astrometry must be paired with high precision calibration of the detector.ДЄims: We present a way to calibrate a detector for high accuracy astrometry. Yet astrometry offers a unique and untapped potential of discovery of habitable-zone low-mass planets around all the solar-like stars of the solar neighborhood.
